Transforming encounters

Encountering Jesus

After spending the last seven weeks looking at the Parables of Jesus in Luke’s gospel, we’re now turning to Encounters with Jesus this coming Sunday. Across the next seven weeks, we’ll look at seven powerful encounters with Jesus that reveal something of who he is, and therefore what it means to follow him.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s ahead:

  1. The encounter with the devil (Luke 4:1‑13) - In the wilderness, Jesus resists temptation and shows us what it means to stand firm on the promises of God’s word.
  2. The encounter with a man with an impure spirit (Luke 4:31-36) - Jesus confronts a man possessed by an impure spirit in a synagogue and amazes the crowd with his authority and power over evil.
  3. The encounter with the paralysed man (Luke 5:17‑26) - Jesus not only heals a broken body, but forgives sin, revealing his ultimate power to bring us back to God.
  4. The encounter with Levi (Luke 5:27‑39) - Jesus calls a tax collector to leave everything behind, reminding us that no one is beyond his invitation.
  5. The encounter with the Pharisee and the sinful woman (Luke 7:36‑50) - In a room full of judgment, Jesus welcomes a woman’s tears and shows us the wonder of love that flows from forgiveness.
  6. The encounter with Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38‑42) - Jesus gently redirects Martha’s busyness, reminding us that the better way is to sit and listen at his feet.
  7. The encounter with the rich young ruler (Luke 18:18‑30) - Jesus challenges a wealthy man to let go of what truly holds his heart.

Please take some time to reflect on the passage of Luke each week. Pray that the Spirit will prepare your heart to hear God speak. And be ready to encounter the transforming power of Jesus in our lives.
